Dr. Dre "I Need A Doctor" Song Ft Eminem, Skylar Grey

"I Need a Doctor" is a song by American hip-hop artist Dr. Dre, released as the second single from his third and final studio album, Detox (2011). The song features guest appearances from American rapper Eminem and singer Skylar Grey. The song is produced by British record producer Alex da Kid, mixed by Dr. Dre, and was released for digital download through the American iTunes Store on February 1, 2011. Musically, "I Need a Doctor" is predominantly a rap song, backed by a "spacey," drum-heavy production, with extra piano keys featured in the introduction and the chorus. However, it also incorporates elements of other genres, particularly pop music with the Skylar Grey-sung chorus and the unusually serious subject matter, much different to the topics covered on Dr. Dre's previous music, especially on his previous two studio albums The Chronic (1992) and 2001 (1999).

Lyrically, the song is largely about Dr. Dre and Eminem's close friendship, and how they have often needed and inspired each other in the past. Due to the song being leaked onto the Internet several months in advance to its release, it was a significant commercial success on its official release, particularly in the United States, where it peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Dr. Dre's second highest peaking song on the chart ever, and also peaking in the upper regions of many national charts. As of July 2011, it has sold over 2,051,000 digital copies in the United States alone, making it Dr. Dre's first song to reach the landmark. An unmastered version of the song was originally leaked on the internet in September 2010, by Studio Leaks's Koolo. A version of the song not featuring Skylar Grey was released in 2004. A newer version was made featuring Skylar Grey in 2010.

Dr. Dre "I Need A Doctor" Song Ft Eminem, Skylar Grey

The official version premiered through Dre's official website. It was produced by English producer Alex da Kid, who is known for co-writing Eminem's hit single "Love the Way You Lie". Kid told MTV News about the experience of working with Dre. "That was amazing. He's one of my favorite producers of all time. Everybody knows how much of a perfectionist he is: He's been working on his album for 11 years. For him to bring me in, trust me, not micro-manage me, and let me bring what I do to the table, I can't even describe how that makes me feel." In an interview with WiLD 94.9, Skylar Grey revealed that the genesis of the song's recording was when Eminem invited her and Alex da Kid to Detroit to work on Detox with him and Dr. Dre. She said that they came to the studio with the hook and "the track" prepared and they loved it and Eminem went in the backroom and two hours later came out and said that he was done writing his verses. Skylar Grey also said that she was in tears when she heard Eminem's verses for the first time and that Alex da Kid initially proposed featuring Lady Gaga on the hook, but Eminem supported the idea of having Skylar's voice and said that they were not taking her voice off the track. The song contains the rapper Eminem rapping two verses about his mentor, thanking Dre for believing in him in his early days and returning the favor, before Dre delivers the song's final verse.

The video was shot with Allen Hughes, the director behind Menace II Society and The Book of Eli. The video premiered on February 24, 2011. The video begins with an introduction of his music career, such as when he and fellow N.W.A. member DJ Yella were in the 80's funk group World Class Wreckin' Cru. There are also scenes of Dr. Dre and his family, such as him hugging his daughter and son and getting married. There are also snippets from past music videos. It includes many rappers such as 2Pac, Eazy-E, The D.O.C, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Xzibit and all the rest of the members from N.W.A.

The video then features Dr. Dre driving down Pacific Coast Highway in a Ferrari 360, with flashbacks of his life, crashing his car and the last thing heard was his daughter say "Good night Daddy." Then he is transported to a medical facility. The date at the beginning of the video is February 18, 2001 (his 36th birthday). They fast-forward to present day ten years later, where he has been hospitalized and is on life support. The Marin County Civic Center stands in for the medical facility. Eminem raps next to him as he is floating in an isolation tank, during which the figure of The Pythia (played by Canadian actress Estella Warren) is singing as a hologram behind and over Dre, mouthing the words to Skylar Grey's vocal part in the song. Skylar Grey herself appears as one of the doctors in the video, but never actually appears singing her part. Dre eventually wakes up and goes through rehab, and the video ends with him standing next to the grave of Eazy-E, a rapper who had launched Dre's music career by founding N.W.A and was also a member along with Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella. Through the video, a clock ticking is heard midway through the video. The music video received complaints of being an "act of advertising" for a variety of products from a Ferrari, a G-Shock, HP, Gatorade, and Dr. Dre's signature headphones, Beats by Dr. Dre.

Dr. Dre, Eminem and Skylar Grey performed the song at the 2011 Grammy Awards as part of a medley with "Love the Way You Lie (Part II)" performed by Rihanna, Adam Levine and Eminem.Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave the song a very positive review - rating the song five stars out of five; "Why is 'I Need A Doctor' such a brilliant single? Well, first of all there's the production from British knob-twiddling whizz Alex da Kid, which has a similar gravitas and bone-rattling bombast to his work on 'Love the Way You Lie' and 'Airplanes'. Then there's the haunting chorus, delivered by Diddy's 'Coming Home' bud Skylar Grey, which inhabits you from first listen.

However, what elevates 'I Need A Doctor' from "very good" to "a little bit special" are the performances of Dre and Em. That single manly tear dribbling down your cheek? Entirely, entirely justified."The track first appeared on the UK Singles Chart, at number 21 on February 6, 2011—being Dr. Dre's sixth highest-charting single in the UK and his ninth Top 40 single. It has since peaked at #8 as of March 27, 2011. It debuted at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 with sales of 226,000, becoming his first top-ten single as lead artist on the chart in 16 years, since "Keep Their Heads Ringin" reached #10 in 1995. It is also his second highest peak on the chart ever as lead artist, behind only "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" which peaked at #2 in 1993. It has since peaked at #4 after selling 283,000 in its third week on the charts, the resurgence in sales seemingly due to its performance at the 2011 Grammy Awards.

Kesha "Blow" Song

"Blow" is a song by American recording artist and songwriter Kesha, from her first extended play (EP), Cannibal. The song was released as the EP's second single on February 8, 2011. It was written by Kesha, along with Klas Åhlund, Lukasz Gottwald, Allan Grigg, Benjamin Levin and Max Martin, with production done by Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Benny Blanco and Kool Kojak. According to Kesha the song's lyrics are representative of herself and her fans. "Blow" is dominantly an electropop and dance-pop song and is described as a party anthem as it portrays a simple message of having a desire to have a good time at a club. Critical reception of "Blow" has been generally mixed to positive. The song's hook and opening have been praised but its chorus was met with mixed reaction, some critics praised the song for its party anthem vibe, while others called it uninspiring and ordinary.

Kesha's vocal work throughout the song was also met with mixed reaction, some critics felt that she was both sassy and brash, while other critics felt that her personality was missing from the song. Commercially, "Blow" reached the top ten in the United States and Australia, becoming her sixth consecutive top-ten hit in both countries as a solo artist. The song also reached the top ten in New Zealand, and the top twenty in Canada. The song's accompanying music video was directed by Chris Marrs Piliero and was released February 25, 2011. The video co-stars actor James Van Der Beek, who plays Kesha's nemesis. Piliero and Kesha came up with the videos concept and is intended to be simplistic, a video that is cool and random. Reception of the video by critics was positive, with the mid-video dialogue scene's humor being highlighted.

Kesha "Blow" Song

"Blow" was written by Kesha alongside Klas Åhlund, Lukasz Gottwald, Alan Grigg, Benjamin Levin and Max Martin. Production of the song was completed by Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Benny Blanco and Kool Kojak. According to Kesha the line "We’re taking over" is representative of herself and her fans, which she explained during an interview with Beatweek Magazine, "I love that I say ‘we’re taking over’ in it because my fans and me have started a cult. We’re misfits of society but we’ve banded together and we’re starting a revolution. We are taking over. So get used to it." "Blow" is a dance-pop and electropop song that uses a synth infused beat as a backing. The song opens with laughing followed by a command to dance. As the chorus of the song starts in, Kesha's vocals change into an auto-tuned "stuttering" as she repeats "This place about to blow" four times over an electro beat.

During the song's bridge, Kesha's vocals change pace into a rap-sing style as she tells her listeners to "Go insane, go insane / Throw some glitter / Make it rain on 'em / Let me see them hands." Kesha uses layered vocals that are enhanced in some parts with the use of Auto-Tune. Lyrically, "Blow" portrays a simple message, described as a party-anthem, the song speaks of having a desire to have a good time at the club. Bill Lamb from About.com felt that the song's lyrics portrayed a "thumbnail description of herself and her fans, "Dirt and glitter cover the floor / We're pretty and sick, we're young and we're bored." According to Robert Cospey from Digital Spy, the track is of similar character to Benny Benassi's track, "Satisfaction" (2002). "Blow" was originally released exclusively to the iTunes Store as part of a "Countdown to Cannibal" promotion, and thus originally entered the Billboard Hot 100 on the issue date titled December 4, 2010, reaching position ninety-seven and dropping off the chart the following week.

After being released as a single, the song re-entered the chart on the issue date titled February 12, 2011, reaching a new peak of ninety-six. The following week the song jumped thirty positions reaching position sixty-six. The song continued to steadily ascend the charts eventually reaching a peak of seven on the week of March 19, 2011. On the song's peak week it sold 164,000 digital copies and was listed at position six on Billboards Hot Digital Songs. Charting within the top ten, the song became Kesha's sixth straight top ten single as a solo artist. On Billboard's Pop chart, the song reached a peak of number three. As of June 2011, "Blow" has sold over 2,000,000 copies in the United States. With the song passing two million in sales it became her sixth consecutive single to sell more than two million copies. In Canada, "Blow" entered the Canadian Hot 100 on the issue date February 5, 2011, at one hundred.

The following week the song jumped thirty-one positions to attain position sixty-nine. On its third week "Blow" once again rose this time to position fifty-four. The song continued to steadily ascended the chart eventually reaching a peak of twelve. In New Zealand, "Blow" entered the charts at position twenty where it became that week's highest debut. The following week it rose nine positions attaining position eleven. On the song's third week on the chart "Blow" reached its peak at number eight. The song became her second straight top ten hit and her fourth overall. It has since been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) for sales of 7,500 units. On February 27, 2011, "Blow" entered the Australian chart at position twenty-four. On the issue date of March 13, 2011, the song reached position thirteen, where it held the spot for two weeks. The following week the song reached its peak at position ten, becoming her sixth straight top ten single, but her first to miss the top five. It has since been certified platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) for sales of 70,000 units. In the United Kingdom, "Blow" entered the charts on the week of April 2, 2011, at position eighty, later peaking at number thirty-two.

The music video for "Blow" was directed by Chris Marrs Piliero. The video was released on February 25, 2011. Kesha wanted the video to be "different, a video that was cool and random". The director, Piliero, came up with the idea for the video's mythological aspect saying, "I had this idea running in my head with just the idea of unicorns, If I massacred unicorns, they could bleed rainbows. I'm a fan of violence and I'm always trying to find a way to make it OK." While being interviewed Piliero spoke of the collaboration with Kesha, explaining her point of view on the video, "Before we started filming, we had quite a few talks. She was adamant you can't back away from the crazy; everything about the idea she loved and she enforced the fact that she wanted to embrace every aspect of it and really go for it, On set, she was having fun. She was like, 'I want to lick a unicorn.' It was rad working with her because there definitely wasn't a sense of her feeling awkward about stuff or detached; no ego. It felt like we had worked together before."

Justin Bieber "That Should Be Me" Song ft Rascal Flatts

Justin Drew Bieber (born March 1, 1994) is a Canadian pop/R&B singer-songwriter and actor. Bieber was discovered in 2008 by Scooter Braun, who happened to come across Bieber's videos on YouTube and later became his manager. Braun arranged for him to meet with Usher in Atlanta, Georgia, and Bieber was soon signed to Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG), a joint venture between Braun and Usher, and then to a recording contract with Island Records offered by L.A. Reid. His debut single, "One Time", released worldwide in 2009, peaked in the top ten in Canada and charted in the top thirty in several international markets. His debut release, My World, followed on November 17, 2009, and was eventually certified platinum in the United States. He became the first artist to have seven songs from a debut album chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

Bieber's first full studio release, My World 2.0, was released on March 23, 2010 and has since received similar success; it debuted at number one and within the top ten of several countries, and was certified platinum in the United States. It was preceded by the worldwide top-ten single, "Baby", in January 2010. The music video of "Baby" is currently ranked as the most viewed and most discussed YouTube video, and was the most disliked until being overtaken by Rebecca Black's song Friday. Bieber followed-up the release of his debut album with his first headlining tour, the My World Tour, the remix albums My Worlds Acoustic and Never Say Never – The Remixes, and the 3D biopic-concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never – which had an opening weekend gross that nearly matched the record for the biggest opening weekend for a concert-film.

Chris Brown "Next To You" Song ft. Justin Bieber

"Next 2 You" is a song by American recording artist Chris Brown, included as a track on his fourth studio album, F.A.M.E., released on March 18, 2011. The song features Canadian singer Justin Bieber and was produced by Nasri Atweh and Adam Messinger of The Messengers, who wrote the song with Brown and Amber Streeter of American R&B girl group RichGirl. Brown first revealed plans to collaborate with Bieber in December 2010, and the track is the first of two tracks they worked together on, the second being a remix of Bieber's "Up." Musically, "Next 2 You" is a R&B and pop number, with lyrics pertaining to the love between two in a relationship. Most music critics positively reviewed the song, complimenting the blending of Brown and Bieber's vocals. However a common criticism of the track was how it stood out in comparison into the more lyrically explicit music on F.A.M.E..

After the release of the album, the song appeared on the charts in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The song was written by Brown and Amber Streeter (of American R&B girl group RichGirl) with Nasri Atweh and Adam Messinger of production team The Messengers. The latter duo receive production credits on the track. In December 2010, Brown tweeted that he would be collaborating with Bieber, posting on Twitter, "ME and @justinbieber got a BANGER/SMASH record for all the fans out there at the top of the NEW YEAR!!! 2011." The song first appeared online on March 8, 2011.

Chris Brown "Next To You" Song ft. Justin Bieber

The song was one of two collaborations between Bieber and Brown in 2011, the other being a remix of "Up" from Bieber's My World 2.0 album, which was included as a track on his Never Say Never - The Remixes set. In an interview with MTV News, Brown revealed that the duo recorded the "Up" remix first, and Brown wanted Bieber on his album after their first collaboration."Next to You" is a R&B and pop song. The song has lyrics about a relationship, but Eliot Glazer of MTV Buzzworthy said that the song also contained inspirational lyrics. It features "digitized" violins. According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, the song is set in common time with a moderate tempo of 116 beats per minute. It is composed in the key of E♭ major with Bieber and Brown's vocal ranges spanning from the low-note of G3 to the high-note of C6.

The song features the chord progression of E♭–B♭–Cm–A♭. Nadia Noir of WXRK said the song was a hybrid of a "dance-jam" and "love-song." Furthermore, AOL Music's Charley Rogulewski called the song a "dreamy pop love song." The song sees Brown and Bieber trading verses and the chorus in lyrics like "I'll be there when you're insecure/ Let you know that you're always lovely/ Girl, because you are the only thing that I got right now." Brad Wete of Entertainment Weekly coined the song as "thumping" and said that "Brown and guest Justin Bieber trade verses assuring their ladies of their dedication." Joanne Dorken of MTV News UK said "It seems that everything Justin Bieber touches turns to gold at the moment and this cutesy ballad is no exception." Dorken complimented how well the song showed the blending of the pair's voices, and she commented, as "the most 'pop' song on the LP, we are hoping Chris decides to make this a single… a sure fire hit."

Nadia Noir of WXRK wrote, "What do you get when you combine two of pop’s best-looking/greatest dancers, the sexy rasp of Justin Bieber, and a dance-jam/love-song? A combination of all the best elements of music!" Nick Levine of BBC Music said the track was part of Brown's identity crisis on the album, as "Next 2 You" was just two tracks after the "grisly sex jam" of "Wet the Bed" featuring Ludacris. Levine called the collaboration a "wholesome-as-homemade-chutney hook-up." While complementing that the album had "something for everyone," Jody Rosen of Rolling Stone called "Next 2 You" a "puppy-love declaration." Bri LaPelusa called the song a "dreamy ballad" and said it melted Brown and Bieber's "angelic" voices. She went on to add that "Next to You" "might be affirmation that Chris Brown is once again an accepted celebrity." Concerning the lyrics, Eliot Glazer of MTV Buzzworthy said "It ain't new, but it's still cute." Eric Henderson of Slant Magazine said Brown was unable to capture the "majesty of 'Forever'" with the song, noting it was "rendered limp by the undercurrent of sincerity." Jon Caramanica of The New York Times wrote that the song does not compliment Brown's already weak voice, and called it "geniunely awful."

Caramanica also commented that Brown was "apparently not worried about the stain this collaboration might leave." Due to digital sales after the release of F.A.M.E., "Next 2 You" debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100 charts of the week ending April 9, 2011. The song debuted at number ten on the Hot Digital Songs chart in the US, and therefore consecutively appeared at number twenty-six on the Hot 100. The following week, the song fell to number ninety before falling off the chart the next week. On the Canadian Hot 100, it debuted at number thirty-six, and spent one week on the chart. In the United Kingdom, after the release of F.A.M.E., "Next 2 You" appeared at number forty-six. It spent one week on the chart. The music video for "Next 2 You" was directed by Colin Tilley and filmed at the Universal Studios in Los Angeles, and upper Manhattan. On May 10, 2011, Bieber's manager confirmed plans for a music video via Twitter. In an interview with MTV News, Tilley spoke briefly about the video, saying "Tomorrow, I'm shooting New Boyz and Chris Brown ... then Justin Bieber and Chris Brown, together... I can't tell you anything about that yet, but it's going to happen.

It's gonna be big. It's gonna be big. I can't say anything else." On May 21, 2011, Brown posted two photos from the shoot via Twitter, showing him and Bieber standing among overturned cars in a path of destruction. However, the unfinished version of the music video leaked onto the internet on June 6, and the final cut was premiered on June 17, 2011.The video begins with Brown and Bieber interacting with their girlfriends. Bieber's love interest is removed by her father, who reprimands, "I told you not to see him again." Brown is thinking of his girlfriend (played by Shannon Elizabeth) before the apocalypse occurs, which is characterized by land fissures, buildings toppling down and fiery scenery. Brown searches for his love interest who is then hit by a car. Brown saves her by leaping over the fissure. The video closes with the two couples reuniting. Interspersed are scenes of Brown and Bieber dancing amongst the destruction. Jamie Peck of MTV wrote of the video, "The whole thing is delightfully ridiculous in its cinematic drama".

Rihanna "Man Down" Song

"Man Down" is a song performed by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna, taken from her fifth studio album Loud (2010). The song was sent to US rhythmic and urban radio on May 3, 2011 and was released as the album's fifth overall single in the United States. The song was written by Shama "Sham" Joseph, Timothy & Theron Thomas, and Shontelle Layne. Production was completed by Shama "Sham" Joseph. Reception of "Man Down" has been positive, with critics calling it a comeback of Rihanna's Caribbean-tinged rhythm. The song is also included on the set list of the Loud Tour.At the beginning of March 2011, Rihanna asked fans to help her select her next single. Via Twitter, fans were asked to choose from "Cheers (Drink to That)," "Man Down," "California King Bed" or "Fading". The most popular choice would have its video filmed at the end of March 2011. On March 12, 2011 it was confirmed that fans had selected "California King Bed" as the next single from the album. In the US, "Man Down" was released to the US rhythmic and urban radio on May 3, 2011. However internationally, "California King Bed" served as the fourth single, as it was announced.

"Man Down" received generally positive reviews from critics, with Jon Pareles of The New York Times saying that Rihanna plays up her West Indian accent in the electro-reggae of “Man Down” about shooting a man in central station. August Brown of Los Angeles Times commented, “Man Down reasserts her Caribbean lilt with a swaggering murder ballad that one can’t help but hear as a warning shot across the radio dial to Chris Brown’s Deuces. Entertainment Weekly writer Leah Greenblatt said that the rum-pa-pum ragga "Man Down" burrows neck-deep in island rhythms. Emily Mackay of NME commented that the album's experiments feel more organic, its tone better paced because of the Caribbean-tinged anthem for doomed youth of "Man Down". James Skinner of BBC Online viewed "Man Down" as a Caribbean rhythm, where Rihanna relays a break-up as murder metaphor in thick Barbadian patois. Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine named the song the album's biggest highlight, a full-fledged reggae tune about a woman who shoots a man. He praised the song saying that Rihanna is surprisingly agile in this genre and is one of her finest, most confident vocal performances to date.

Rihanna "Man Down" Song

The music video for "Man Down" was shot in Jamaica in April 2011, and was directed by Anthony Mandler, who worked with Rihanna for most of her music videos. On May 1, 2011, Rihanna posted three images from the shoot via Twitter. One of the images showed her on a beach wearing a white Dolce & Gabbana dress, while another image showed her riding a bike in Portland Parish. In an interview with MTV News on May 16, 2011, Mandler discussed the music video more in depth: We shot the video last month in Jamaica and it's my favorite song she's ever recorded, so I was really excited to get involved. And it's just one of those songs that demands a strong narrative and visual, and let's just say she let me go all the way. So I think you can expect something that's dramatic and shocking and intense and emotional and uplifting and enlightening.

The video begins on a dramatic note when Rihanna shoots a man making his way through a busy train station. After committing her crime, the camera focuses on the shot man and later Rihanna flees the scene. So as to give viewers some history, the video travels back in time to the previous day, when the singer is seen riding her bike and meeting with people in Kingston, Jamaica. There are also scenes of Rihanna alone inside a bedroom at dusk. Then, at a nightclub, Rihanna begins to dance and flirt with another club-goer, the man who she is seen shooting at the video's beginning. After she leaves the club, the singer's dance-floor partner follows her outside and begins to get violent. The video then cuts straight to the scene of a disheveled Rihanna crying in the street, after what appears to have been a sexual assault. The video concludes with the singer running to her home where she grabs a gun hidden in a dresser drawer, after which the beginning scene is replayed where she shoots him.

The Parents Television Council (PTC), a non-profit organization which advocates responsible entertainment, criticized Rihanna for "cold, calculated execution of murder" in the video. The council disagreed with Rihanna's suggestion that killing a rapist is a proper form of justice and her rationale that it "sends a very strong underlying message 4 girls like me." They also stated "If Chris Brown shot a woman in his new video and BET premiered it, the world would stop. Rihanna should not get a pass." PTC also criticized BET for airing the video. In response to the PTC, Rihanna stated: I'm a 23 year old singer who doesn't have kids. What's up with everybody wanting me to be a parent [to their children]? I'm just a girl, I can only be our voice. We all know it's difficult and embarrassing to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone, especially our parents. The music industry isn't "Parent's 'R Us." We have the freedom to make art; let us! It's your job to make sure your children don't turn out like us. You can't hide your kids from society, or they'll never learn how to adapt. This is the real world!

"California King Bed" is a song by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna, from her fifth studio album, Loud (2010). Written by The Runners, Priscilla Renea and Alex Delicata, and produced by The Runners, it was released on May 13, 2011 as the album's fourth international single. The track has charted moderately well, peaking within the top ten in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. The song is being featured in the 2011 "100 Years of Skin Care" Nivea Commercial campaign. At the beginning of March 2011, Rihanna asked fans to help her select her next single. Via Twitter, fans were asked to choose from "Cheers (Drink to That)", "Man Down", "California King Bed" or "Fading". The most popular choice will have its video filmed at the end of March 2011. On March 12, 2011 it was confirmed that fans had selected "California King Bed" as the next single from the album. But in the US, "Man Down" was sent to radio before "California King Bed".

However internationally, "California King Bed" served as the fourth single, as it was announced.Stacey Anderson of Spin commented on the song: " 'California King Bed' is a wrenching ballad about the waking death of a relationship, the stage of limbo before the final crash; it's so well-delivered, in fact, that it's hard to hear." Ryan Dombell from Pitchfork Media said, "'California King Bed' is a 'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing'-type power ballad genetically engineered to soundtrack a bi-coastal Kate Hudson rom-com." Boston Phoenix writer Daniel Brockman perceived the song as an innocuous soft jam. Andy Gill of The Independent viewed the song as a big break-up power-ballad and that it features Rihanna's best vocal performance. Andy Kellman of AllMusic, however, was disparaging of the song, labelling it an "overwrought rock weeper."

NME's Emily Mackay also felt the song was a "howler of a ballad, with shlocky acoustic intro, trite piano and a faux-Slash solo." Robert Copsey from Digital Spy gave the song four out of five stars, saying that, "The fourth single proper from Loud may pull in the reins as far as the hectic dance beats and sado-masochistic lyrics go, but it's no less beefy and extravagant. Lilting acoustic guitars metamorphose into '80s rawk ones as she sings about the kind of separate-togetherness felt moments before a break-up. She belts out in a range well beyond her natural vocal ability." "California King Bed" was written by Andrew Harr, Jermaine Jackson, and Priscilla Renea. In the song, Rihanna sings of being in the same bed as her partner, but feeling emotionally distant ("In this California king bed / We're 10,000 miles apart"; "You gave me one last touch that made everything feel better / And even then, my eyes got wetter"), among other emotions. The song is written in the key of G major with a moderately slow tempo of 92 beats per minute. "California King Bed" follows a chord progression of G/B–C2 for the verses, and G–D–Em–C for the chorus.

Before officially being released as a single, "California King Bed" debuted on the Australian Singles Chart and New Zealand Singles Chart. In Australia, it debuted at number sixty-one on April 11, 2011 and has peaked at number four. In New Zealand, the song debuted at eighteen on April 18, 2011 and has peaked at five. In the United Kingdom, the song debuted at thirty-six for the week of May 22, 2011 and rose to twenty the following week. The song reached a peak of number eight on June 5, 2011. In the United States, the song made its debut for the week ending June 4, 2011 at number eighty on the US Billboard Hot 100. On the Canadian Hot 100 it debuted at eighty-two for the week of May 28, 2011 and jumped to forty-two the week that followed.Rihanna filmed the music video for "California King Bed" in March 2011.

The shots took one day on a stage in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. The video is almost entirely set in an open-air bedroom by the beach of an ocean. Director of the video was Anthony Mandler, who is a regular collaborator of Rihanna. He directed a dozen music videos for her, including "Russian Roulette" and "Only Girl (In the World)". About the video and his long collaboration with Rihanna, Mandler spoke to MTV News: I think it's something that is so unique about Rihanna whatever she's doing, whatever character she's playing, whatever side of herself she's showing, she's in it 1,000 percent... And I think the song and the theme of this song, she wanted to obviously show a softer side, a lighter side, one that's caught in maybe a tumultuous relationship... There's so much variety with her and it's been such a journey with her.The creative director, Ciarra Pardo, designed a custom bed that is 18 feet long and is capable of transporting Rihanna the full length of the bed. Another notable object in the bedroom is a sculptural "Strata" chair designed by Stew Design by Twentieth.

The video premiered Monday, May 9, 2011 on her official website Rihannanow.com and VEVO. Almost the whole video set is made in tropical and romantic setting. The video begins with a shot of Rihanna herself laying down in grass. Then scenes of Rihanna walking on the beach and Rihanna curling up on the chair are shown. This is followed by her own and her partner holding each other closely in bed, sitting on different sides of a large bed, and other scenes featuring Rihanna singing through sheer curtains and drapery. In the video there are also black-white scenes showing Rihanna touching to a stone wall. In this video, Rihanna returned to nature as in her video for her previous single, "Only Girl (In the World)", which features nearly the same colors as the California King Bed video. Rihanna's just rolled-out-bed appearance is completed by the modest, cream-colored attire in the airy, light-filled clip.

Rihanna first performed "California King Bed" in a country style, along with Sugarland front woman Jennifer Nettles, during the ACM Awards held by Academy of Country Music on April 3, 2011. She was also a special guest star on the tenth season of US series American Idol, on April 14, 2011, where she performed the song for a second time. Rihanna promoted the song with few performances in European cities such as Milan, Paris and Hamburg where she was appearing for her campaign with the Nivea skincare. It was also performed on May 27, 2011 on NBC's Today show, as a part of the Summer Concert Series, along with her US Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits from "Loud", Only Girl (In the World), "What's My Name?" and "S&M". The song is also included on the set list of the Loud Tour.
